How Can Commercial Christmas Lights Run a DMX Light Show?

Commercial Christmas lights controlled by DMX with XMAS Dimmers in Berlin

Every winter, decoration companies hang thousands of metres of ordinary LED Christmas lights in shopping centres, ice rinks and Christmas markets. Most of those commercial Christmas lights still run on the small controller box that came with them, cycling through a few fixed blink modes. This article shows how the same strings become a programmable DMX light show, synchronised with music, without replacing the lights themselves.

It is written for decoration and installation companies, event technicians and venue operators preparing this season’s Christmas projects. You will learn what the XMAS DIMMER does, how 100 units were used in a Berlin installation, and which mistakes to avoid on site.

What Is the XMAS DIMMER for Commercial Christmas Lights?

The XMAS DIMMER is an 8-output DMX dimmer built for conventional low-voltage LED Christmas lights. It replaces the original blink controller of each light string, so any DMX512 controller can dim the string instead. Lighting consoles, DMX software and show controllers all speak this protocol. A Christmas tree can therefore sit in the same cue list as the stage lights.

The XMAS DIMMER is a compact PCB module without its own power supply or housing. It runs from an external 12–36 V DC supply and is designed to be mounted into your own enclosure or electrical cabinet. All eight outputs and the DIP switch sit on one edge of the board, which makes that integration simple.

Which Christmas Lights Work With the XMAS DIMMER?

It works with 12–36 V DC light strings that use an anti-parallel LED connection. In these strings, half of the LEDs face one direction and half face the other. The odd and even sections therefore light up on opposite polarity. That is why the original box can blink them alternately — and why a standard single-polarity LED dimmer would light only half of the string.

Each XMAS DIMMER output is a full H-bridge that controls both polarities independently. One string thus gives you two separately dimmable groups instead of one. The same principle drives dual-polarity CCT bulbs such as our Edison CCT light bulbs, where the two groups are warm and cool white.

What Does One XMAS DIMMER Control?

One XMAS DIMMER controls eight Christmas light strings independently and uses 16 DMX channels. Every output takes two consecutive channels: the first sets the brightness of one polarity, the second sets the other. Output 1 listens to channels 1 and 2, output 8 to channels 15 and 16.

Parameter XMAS DIMMER
Outputs 8, dual-polarity PWM (full H-bridge)
DMX channels 16 (2 per output)
Operating voltage 12–36 V DC; output voltage = input voltage
Max. current per output 0.5 A, resettable fuse 0.7 A
Dimming 8-bit (256 levels), PWM approx. 1,000 Hz
DMX input Isolated, ESD protected, any DMX512 controller
Addressing DIP switch
Operating conditions −10 °C to +45 °C, 5–80 % RH non-condensing
Protection IP00, PCB only, indoor use
Warranty 5-year limited warranty

The roughly 1,000 Hz PWM frequency keeps the strings flicker-free on most video cameras. That matters in shopping centres, where visitors film the decorations and post them online. Because the output switches polarity, the LEDs are always pulsed, even at full brightness. That is why we say most cameras, not all.

How Many Strings Can You Connect to One Output?

As many as fit within 0.5 A per output. You can wire several strings in parallel to one output, but they will then always behave as one group. Check the current rating on each string’s original adapter before planning the load.

For quoting, a quick ceiling helps. At 24 V, 0.5 A equals 12 W per output and 96 W per dimmer. At 31 V it equals 15.5 W per output and 124 W per dimmer. Treat these as limits, not targets, and leave headroom.

Case Study: 100 XMAS Dimmers in Berlin

For Winterlights at DARK MATTER in Berlin, 100 XMAS Dimmers drive conventional Christmas lights on decorated trees. The video shows the result: the strings run coordinated effects as part of the light show instead of a free-running blink pattern.

How Much DMX Do 100 XMAS Dimmers Need?

On paper, 100 dimmers drive up to 800 separately controllable strings, or 1,600 dimmable groups. That equals 1,600 DMX channels. One DMX universe carries 512 channels, which is exactly 32 dimmers. And 32 is also the device limit for one DMX daisy chain, so the planning numbers line up neatly.

A 100-unit site therefore needs at least four DMX lines: three full lines of 32 units and one of 4. More than 32 devices on one output require a DMX splitter, and long cable runs should end with a DMX terminator.

Cabling adds up quickly on a site this size. Each XMAS DIMMER takes DMX on a 3-pin header with an included break-out cable to standard XLR DMX cabling, so the line runs from dimmer to dimmer like any other DMX fixture.

For a decoration company the real question is commercial: will the client pay for a show rather than a decoration? The table compares the three options we see on commercial Christmas projects.

Criterion Original blink controller XMAS DIMMER + DMX Addressable pixel LED
Lights needed Existing strings Existing strings New addressable strips or pixels
Control per string Fixed blink modes 2 dimmable groups per string Every pixel
Sync across the site None All strings from one cue list All pixels from one cue list
Music sync No Yes, via DMX software or console Yes
Control source Button on the box Any DMX512 controller Pixel controller + mapping software
Best fit Small shops, homes Malls, ice rinks, markets with existing stock Flagship installations, facades

The middle column is where decorators gain the most. Stock you already own becomes a product you can sell again, as a show. When a client needs animation inside a single string, you have moved to pixels — see how to control LED strips over DMX and Art-Net.

How Do You Convert an Existing Christmas Light String?

  1. Check the string’s adapter label: the string must be rated 12–36 V and use anti-parallel LEDs.
  2. Cut the two wires between the original blink controller and the string.
  3. Connect the string’s two wires to one XMAS DIMMER output (pin A and pin B).
  4. Power the dimmer from a DC supply matching the strings’ rated voltage — the outputs carry the input voltage. Size it for all eight outputs: at 24 V, 8 × 0.5 A is 4 A (96 W) plus 3 W for the dimmer itself.
  5. Set the DMX start address on the DIP switch in steps of 16 — for example, address 17 means DIP 1 and DIP 5 on (1 + 16).
  6. Daisy-chain up to 32 units per DMX line and terminate the last one.
  7. Programme and test the show in LED Strip Studio software or on your console before installation day.

Installation must be carried out by a competent person or a qualified electrician, in line with local regulations.

Which Mistakes Ruin a Christmas Light DMX Install?

Most failures on Christmas DMX projects come from site conditions and planning, not from the dimmer. These are the ones worth checking before the season starts.

  • Mounting the bare PCB outdoors. The XMAS DIMMER is IP00 and rated for −10 °C to +45 °C, non-condensing. At ice rinks and outdoor markets, keep it in a dry technical room or a suitable enclosure and run only the low-voltage cables outside.
  • Exceeding 0.5 A per output. The 0.7 A resettable fuse protects the board, but a dark output on opening night is still a failed show.
  • Leaving the original blink controller in the circuit. It must be cut out completely; the XMAS DIMMER takes over its job.
  • Feeding the wrong supply. Input must be DC within 12–36 V and match the voltage the strings are rated for.
  • Duplicate DIP addresses. Two dimmers on the same address always move together, which looks like a fault.
  • Running 33+ devices on one DMX line. Use a splitter above 32 units and a terminator on long runs.

Summary

The XMAS DIMMER turns conventional 12–36 V Christmas light strings with anti-parallel LEDs into DMX-controlled fixtures, so decorators keep the lights they already own. One unit drives eight strings on 16 DMX channels, and both polarities of every string dim separately. Thirty-two dimmers fill exactly one DMX universe, which is also the device limit for one DMX line. At Winterlights in DARK MATTER Berlin, 100 XMAS Dimmers cover up to 800 strings and 1,600 DMX channels, which needs at least four DMX lines. Keep the bare PCB dry and above −10 °C, stay within 0.5 A per output, and programme the show before installation day.
