DMX to SPI – How to multiply your DMX outputs?

Why is DMX to SPI option available? #

In order to have a All-In-One device that can control both digital and analog LED strips, the function to actually change the SPI output to DMX output was necessary. Also, it is pretty cool. Imagine you can have 5×32 DMX devices hooked up to a single controller. Of course, it is a stretch, yet still possible. Funny stuff aside, the ability to multiply your DMX outputs, change SPI to DMX can be pretty handy on projects where you combine different technologies.

How many outputs can I change this way? #

Short answer is as many as you would like. In the software or the web configuration tool, you can choose which strip type you are using for each output separately.

What gear are you using in your video? #

LED Ethernet Controller 3, LED Strip Studio software and homemade SPI to RJ45 cable. Small 4channel Lady dimmer used in the example has RJ45 for DMX IN/OUT, hence the DIY beauty you can see in the video. However, you can definitely purchase something more professional looking.

Mapping #

In the mapping, you draw a Digital strip and assign it to your output. In the example used, we are working with 2 dimmers and two segments, thus we created a Group that represents single output. For this output, you have to select DMX RGB for strip type.

Address is then set as the LED Curve number. Hence when you have address 10 on your Dimmer, you set the LED Curve no. to 10.

What effects can I use ? #

In the library, you have a ton of effects. Static colors and color chases. These can not be obviously applied to your analog strip, since it can only display single color at a time. However, you can create a video effect and apply the color effect to that animation. Colors will then flesh on your analog strip.

Which controllers are capable of DMX to SPI? #

Both SPI Matrix and LED Ethernet controller 3 can change the strip type of the SPI output to DMX.

How many devices can I connect to single output? #

As mentioned above, Standard recommended limit of 32 devices per single DMX line. You can test more, less will definitely work.
