During the summer of 2024 we were busy decorating a stage. Nothing extraordinary you might say. Well, this one was situated pretty high above sea level. Exactly 2000m! A small picturesque village named Serfaus is home to one of the largest SKI resorts in Austria – Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. The brief was to enhance an existing piece.

What did we build?

The stage can be divided into three sections. Two are vertical crystals that were previously installed in place and are used for projection mapping. We outlined them with LED strip pixels. Third section is a stage. This was a challenge since the part of the stage is using hydraulics to go up and down during the show.

How many controllers did we use?

In total, we used 5 LED Ethernet Controller 3 devices in 4096 pixel versions. These were connected to a switch and to a local network that led to FOH.

What is the number of meters of pixel LED strips that we used in this project?

200 meters for the crystals and around 50 meters for the stage itself. The strip that we used has 60 pixels per meter and it was a 12V strip. This is mainly for the ease of installation and the fact that with 12V strip you don’t need that many power injection points.

What about the temperature?

We realized that during the winter, the temperature at that height can be a serious problem. We instructed the client that it should be imperative for them to leave the pixels ON during the night when temperature drops well below 0. Also, we hid the strips into aluminum profiles and strips itself are already placed in a plastic tubes. This should ensure that they will last for a very long time.

The controllers are hidden in electrical boxes that are IP rated and the components in the devices can withstand temperatures well below 0 degree Celsius.

How did you pre-program the show?

Every Wednesday, thousands of visitors flock to the top of the ski cabin station to enjoy a spectacular show. The show in itself is over on hour long. We programmed 3 shows in LED Strip Studio software and pre-made tons of effects should the client decide to use those through out the show or in the future.

How do you synchronize the show with other elements during the performance?

Everything is ran through MIDI Timecode and triggered automatically.

You can download the whole mapping and project on this link. The brief from the client was to program three independent shows for 1 hour spectacle called Adventure Night – Musicals on the Mountains. First show was to showcase the capabilities of the software and LED pixels. You can watch the show in the video below.

Remaining two shows were complimentary to other stage performances, a drone show, ski instructors show, snowmobiles, dancers, singers. You name it! You can watch the whole performance on this link.

BTW – we also supplied our LED suits and programmed a sho. Read more info here :)
