In this blog, we will talk about a simple DIY installation of LED strip lights in an apartment. For a project in a relatively small space, we decided to use REACTIVO pixel lighting controller.
What you need to think about before installation, what you need to buy, and what tools you should have. This and a bit more you will read in this article. Enjoy 🙂
Planning phase
First of all, you need to think about how your setup would look like – how many pixels you want to install? What voltage are your pixels? What types of pixels do I want to use – RGB/RGBW or White only? Where do you put controllers and power supply – is there a socket? Where will be my computer and how the HDMI cables will connect to my TV?
Why did we pick the REACTIVO ?
Simple – it is the best-suited controller for home usage. Main advantages:
-
- A small yet powerful device that controls up to 1024 pixels
-
- Connection via home WiFi
-
- Can mirror monitor screen and extend it to RGB pixels
-
- Pre-programmed animations and custom effects
-
- Mobile app
-
- Low electricity consumption
What do we use for our installation?
-
- 12V power supply for Digital strips
- 24V power supply for White analog strips
-
- 12 meters of digital RGB strip / 60 pixels per meter
- 12 meters of analog White strip / 120 pixels per meter
-
- Power cable – 2×0,5mm²
-
- Signal cable – 2×0,14mm²
-
- Aluminum profiles & diffuser
What tools you need?
-
- Drill – battery powered, powerful enough for aluminium/dry wall
-
- Meter – no notes. Just a meter.
-
- Solder iron – according to your preference.
-
- Miter saw – to cut 45° great tool and easy to use as well
Regarding the installation, this project can be done by yourself. However, you will need some basic soldering skills Also, you will need to do power injections every 5 meters, since we are using 12V strips.
The last part – attaching LED strips with a silicone, is very easy. Whenever you are working in heights, make sure to have something soft beneath you to fall to, e.g. a friend. In general, we can recommend to work in pair in such project.
