The WS2812 pixel protocol, developed by World Semi in China, is known for its many benefits and is the first in the WS28xx series to feature an integrated LED design. While WS2813 and higher models are often preferred for their higher quality, WS2812 remains a popular choice for pixel lighting displays. It has a control circuit and LEDs integrated into a small 5050 SMD package, making it suitable for use in a variety of applications.
Our LED Strip Studio products support WS2812 as a pixel IC type. Let us help you with your pixel LED installation – get in touch for more information.

WS2812 Pros
- Up to 12V, allowing for long cable lengths
WS2812 Cons
- Data-only restrictions limit the refresh rate to the speed of the protocol, resulting in slower refresh rates
- The low PWM rate makes these pixels unsuitable for use with cameras
- The limited 8 bits of data for each color leads to less smooth dimming curves
- There is no redundancy in the data, increasing the risk of data loss or corruption.
