The Symmetrizer converts the SPI data signal for your addressable LED strips into a differential pair. As a result, it survives a twisted pair cable far past the point where TTL gives up. One channel, 5 to 24 V DC, and protection on both ports. The 70 mm board screws down, so it never dangles on its wires.<\/p>\n
A single-ended TTL data line is fragile over distance. Cable capacitance rounds off the pulse edges. Meanwhile, every motor and dimmer nearby injects noise into the wire. Then, past a few tens of metres, the first pixel reads rubbish instead of a frame.<\/p>\n
A differential pair does not have that weakness. The same data travels on two wires, as the difference between them. Therefore, interference that hits both wires equally cancels out at the far end. The Symmetrizer is the module that moves your signal into that format \u2014 and back out of it.<\/p>\n
A direction selector on the board decides which way the conversion runs. Left open, it is a de-symmetrizer: differential in, TTL out. Shorted, it becomes a symmetrizer: TTL in, differential pair out. So one part number covers both ends of the cable.<\/p>\n
A long link therefore uses a pair. The first module converts to differential where the controller sits. The second converts back to TTL at the strip. However, LEC 3 and SPI MATRIX support the format directly. With those controllers, you fit the converter on the output and run twisted pair from there.<\/p>\n
Past 100 metres as a rule, and up to 500 metres on good cable. That is far enough to keep every controller in one rack room. The signal still reaches the opposite end of a building, a facade or a stage. Of course, real reach depends on your cable, the data rate and the noise around it. So test the run on site before the trenching is dug.<\/p>\n
The cable decides the distance. Run the differential side on ordinary power cable, and you get roughly 20 metres. But put A and B on one twisted pair, with GND alongside. Then the same link reaches 100 metres and beyond. In addition, shielded twisted pair is cheap, available everywhere and easy to terminate.<\/p>\n
The differential receiver needs only 0.2 V between A and B. Also, it tolerates 0 to 5 V with respect to ground.<\/p>\n
One data channel, at up to 1 MHz. That covers the 800 kHz protocols of the common addressable LED ICs, with headroom left over. On the TTL side, it works with the usual levels. A low sits between 0 and 0.7 V, and a high between 3.5 and 5 V.<\/p>\n
A power LED confirms the module is fed. In addition, high and low data indicators on the TTL side show the line actually moving. On a 300 metre run, that matters. Seeing at a glance which end lost the signal saves a long walk with a meter.<\/p>\n
Both ports are 5 mm screw terminals for wire up to 1.5 mm\u00b2. The TTL side carries GND, DATA and power. The differential side carries GND, B and A. So there is nothing to crimp and no proprietary connector. Above all, you can undo the joint with a screwdriver when the layout changes on site.<\/p>\n
Power is anything from 5 to 24 V DC. Therefore the module runs from the same supply as your 5 V, 12 V or 24 V pixels. It draws 0.05 A and under 1.2 W. Your power budget will not notice it.<\/p>\n
The board measures 70 \u00d7 15.2 \u00d7 15 mm and weighs 10 grams. Two 3 mm holes hold it in place. It runs from \u221230 \u00b0C to 65 \u00b0C, and stores from \u221230 \u00b0C to 85 \u00b0C. It also accepts 5 % to 80 % relative humidity, non-condensing. Finally, both ports are protected. So a wiring mistake at one end meets the converter first.<\/p>\n
Anywhere the cable is longer than the signal likes. For example: architectural facades, theatre rigs, clubs and lounges, light shows and showcases. It sits between LEC 3<\/a> or SPI MATRIX<\/a> and your pixels. In addition, it works pixel to pixel as a booster halfway along a very long run.
